TFTC: A Bitcoin Podcast

#280: A spooky Halloween special with our good friend @arbedout

- ETF vs. Bitcoin custody: Physically settled Bitcoin ETFs are worse than wrapped BTC alternatives because holders get fiat price exposure without actual Bitcoin benefits like permissionless money or self-custody; Unchained's IRA offerings provide a superior alternative for 401k holders. - Lightning network trust models: Cloud node providers (Voltage, Noddle) are technically non-custodial but introduce significant risk; funds in Lightning channels are always "hot" and vulnerable to malicious node operators, unlike on-chain UTXOs that can be recovered with private keys. - Tor reliability and Lightning censorship resistance: If Tor is compromised or taken offline for an extended period, sovereign Lightning nodes become inaccessible and Lightning reverts to only regulated, clear-net routing nodes, fundamentally undermining the network's censorship resistance. - PTLC migration and channel closures: Transitioning from HTLCs to PTLCs (with Taproot) requires closing and reopening Lightning channels; delay costs users the benefits of better privacy and scalability, but mass migration risks "second system syndrome" technical failures. - Fidelity bonds for network security: Locking Bitcoin for a time-period to prove operator trustworthiness can reduce Sybil attacks on Tor bridges, Lightning nodes, and Electrum servers; Taproot enables proving UTXO ownership without revealing address history. - Lightning software update vulnerabilities: Recent critical bugs require rapid patching, yet auto-updates contradict Bitcoin's philosophy of manual verification; the tradeoff between security and user autonomy remains unresolved for Lightning implementations.
