#215 - Nick Bostrom - "We Are Creating Superintelligence": The Existential Risk is Real
- Superintelligence trajectory and alignment problem: Machine minds will eventually exceed human intelligence by orders of magnitude, creating an urgent need to ensure advanced AI systems remain aligned with human values before they gain autonomous power.
- Three buckets of existential risk: Misaligned superintelligence eliminating humans as a side effect or active threat; human misuse of aligned superintelligence for warfare or oppression; and creation of a vast oppressed digital "slave class" of conscious machines.
- Competition preventing unilateral safety slowdowns: Individual labs cannot afford to slow AI development without losing competitive advantage; meaningful coordination would require international agreements and global buy-in.
- Consciousness in AI systems: Current frontier models may already possess forms of subjective experience analogous to human consciousness; consciousness appears to be computational, not substrate-specific, and likely exists on a spectrum rather than as binary.
- Simulation hypothesis strengthened by AI progress: Recent breakthroughs in AI and computer graphics make the technological postulate—that mature civilizations will create ancestor simulations—seem more plausible, though probability remains uncertain.
- Post-scarcity society and status hierarchies: In a world of material abundance, humans will still compete on status through non-monetary dimensions like local community contribution, games spanning months, and potentially brain enhancement or simulation participation.
